China Intensifies Christian Persecution: Police Detain Church Leader

The Police in China have continued to intensify its persecution on the Christian community with the recent detention of Sunday School children and their teacher during a raid in China’s remote Xinjiang province.

This indication is contained in a news report by the Release International, a registered Christian Charity adding that Chinese officials have continued their crackdown on house churches.

Quoting China Aid, it noted that the children were in the middle of special summer classes in Urumqi when police and security agents burst in and took children and teachers to a local school for questioning.

“Some of the children’s parents and other members of the Sunday school team were also summoned and questioned. Though the children were released, seven female teachers – including Bao Ling, Wang Xingxing, Luo Qinqin and Lu Xia – are still being held in the Xishan detention centre,” it stated.

According to Release, the raid on July 2 is further evidence to suggest that Chinese officials are engaged in a campaign to eradicate house churches within ten years adding that the campaign appears to be widespread.

It stated: “Police in Jiangxi province, south-east China, recently raided a house church in Houcun village, accusing those present of holding an ‘illegal meeting’. Three church workers were detained but later released.”

It observed that Church property confiscated in the raid – including books, computers and projectors – has yet to be returned. Police said they will release the items only to the church leader.

We note that through its international network of missions, Release International serves persecuted Christians in 30 countries around the world by supporting pastors and Christian prisoners, and their families; supplying Christian literature and Bibles; and working for justice.
