China Ranks First In Global Executions According to Amnesty International’s Report

In a recent report released by the London-based human rights group known as Amnesty International, about 1,200 executions were carried out worldwide back in 2007. The country of China ranks first in the number of executions that have been carried out. But, the group has given forewarning that figures in its recently released report. It adds that everything is not known because there are executions that are carried out in secret.

The secretive use of the death penalty must stop: the veil of secrecy surrounding the death penalty must be lifted,” Amnesty International said in a recent statement. The group adds: “Many governments claim that executions take place with public support. People therefore have a right to know what is being done in their name.”

While the report says that at least 1,200 executions that were carried out in 2007, Amnesty International says that the true figures are much higher. China carried out 470 executions. Iran carried out at least 317 executions.

Almost 70 crimes are punishable by the death penalty in China, according to Amnesty International.

This gives off an indication that Amnesty International will play a vital role in the protests prelude to the 2008 Olympics set to take place in Beijing, China. The record of execution could also loom over what could be a PR nightmare for China as it is set to host the 2008 Summer Olympics this coming August.
