Chinese imports contain banned chemicals

Seafood arriving in Australia from Chinese fish farms has been found to contain banned chemicals.

Consumer group Choice says the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service only tests around five percent of consignments.

The group wants that number increased, with a US Government surveillance program repeatedly finding banned antibiotics in farmed seafood from China.

Choice’s Christopher Zinn says in the past, tests have found fungicides and pesticides in imported farmed fish from China.

“In America at risk suspect fish species from China are 100 per cent tested before they are let into the country.”

“Here we have a system of testing 5 per cent – we think it should be more thorough.”
