Choosing a profession

In older times, when there did not exist training or management institutes nor courses like MBBS or MBA, the practice was put a lad under the care of an Ustad or Guru after knowing his inclination.

Once a son asked his Doctor father as to what made him choose to become a doctor.

His father replied. `Once a father took his son through the bazaar and showed him different people practicing different vocations. As he passed by the grocer’s shop, he asked his son if he wanted to be one, then by the halwai’s shop but the boy did not show any interest and asked his father to move further.

Then came to Akbar’s dawakhan (clinic) where he heard a patient screaming. He, at once, stopped and asked his father as to why the boy was screaming. His father told him that boy was suffering from some serious ailment and the Akbar was trying to cure him back to normalcy and relieve him of his pain.’

`After hearing this, the boy had made up his mind to be the Akbar’s pupil. Relieved, his father took him to the Akbar Mohamed and requested him to make his son his shagird (disciple).’

The father told his son that, it was this which made him take up science side and join the MBBS course and become a doctor.
