Christian conservatives plan to address that none of the candidates running for the Republican nominee for United States President has won them over. That’s despite the fact that candidates such as Mitt Romney and John McCain have tried to appeal to Evangelical Christians in the Midwest and South over the past few months.
For anybody that has been following politics, the states in those regions are primarily red states garnering huge support for the Republican Party. Christian Conservatives let alone White Christian Conservatives have made up the Republican Party’s voting base. Still, the Republican primary elections are still pretty far away. That means that anything can and will happen. Many things can possibly happen within the months to come. But we won’t know what will happen until it actually happens.
That voting base represents one-forth of the electorate. In 2004, that base was instrumental towards George W. Bush getting reelected as the United States President. For the 2008 Presidential elections, that base is going to be a key role to the victory when the Republican primary elections come.
Many people in the Republican base feel uncomfortable about the current candidates vying for the chance to represent the party in the election that is to come next year. There could be many factors that could cause the GOP to lose its voting base for the 2008 Presidential elections.
Some Evangelical voters are concerned about Mitt Romney’s religious faith as a Mormon. He was endorsed by Bob Jones III who is the chancellor of Bob Jones University. Bog Jones III has been viewed under a suspicious eye because he supported abortion rights in the past.
Fred Thompson refused to endorse a Federal law that would ban same-sex marriages in the United States.
But things are more complicated for Rudy Giuliani. For anybody that has been keeping track of Giuliani, one can see that he doesn’t look like a mainstream Republican. His views look to be different from that of the Christian conservatives that make up the current Republican Party’s base. Many Evangelical Christians do not want Giuliani to be the elected nominee which is one of the reasons they are meeting up in Washington.
One is afraid of a possible race between Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton. The two candidates are pro-choice and support the woman’s right to have an abortion. A lawyer and conservative Christian from Orlando said that Giuliani did nothing to appeal to Protestants or Catholics
Drew McKissick states: "If it turns out to be Giuliani and Hillary [Clinton], we’ve got two pro-choice candidates, and that would be a disaster."
This very much shows that the Republican Party at the moment is in danger of losing its voting base. But it’s too early at the time to assume anything. We’ll have to wait another few months to see what happens afterwards.
But, should the GOP lose their vote, it’s going to hurt a whole lot.
