Jammu, March 01 (Scoop News) – Welcoming the end of two-day stand off between the media fraternity and the Legislative Assembly Speaker, the chairman S. O. S. International, Rajiv Chuni has asked to the ruling coalition partners to be more discreet in dealing with the journalists and press media, particularly at a time when every other institution in Jammu and Kashmir has already suffered an erosion of credibility, leaving media – the fourth estate as last saving grace for preserving the values of democracy, freedom and justice.
In a statement, Chuni criticized the Speaker’s to take media for granted and described as most unfortunate the comments by certain high ups in the ruling polity
that media persons could be wooed and taken in by hosting lunch, dinner and lavish parties. He said that it is only pillar in the state, which is working for the poor people and engaged itself in eroding corrupt practices in the government. He also said that those who believe or say so are infact the enemies of democracy because press is one of the essential pillars on which the democracy stands, he added.
Chuni said that media is under obligation to maintain its purity and impartiality, it is also the duty of society in general and the political class in particular, to help media discharge their responsibilities in a fair manner. He pooh-poohed the political class for expecting from media to serve as a cover-up tool for scams or corruption cases and instead try to keep their own record clean.
Censuring the allegations made by some ruling politicians, he said that it should not be forgotten that it is purely because of media’s investigative reporting that the Nation could get to know and judiciary could initiate action in such vital cases as 2G scam at national level as well as a host of scams within the state, including the recently reported
misappropriation and corruption in health department. He also asked the government to provide security cover to the working journalists, who are now being treated as
enemy of some of ruling people.
