Churchgoer, Alcolyte Derek Medina Charged for Facebook Murder of Wife

In a very telling story about the state of our relationships, a Miami man had a domestic dispute with his wife. She said she is going to leave him and pulled a knife. He dismounted the knife and shot his wife several times – point blank probably.

Derek was charged with first degree murder and was held without bond.\

This story is an amazing account of modern day relationships and our instant reactions to family disputes.

However, what is most disturbing about this story is that he posted photos of his dead wife on facebook. Several photos, a confession, and a goodbye saying, “I luv you all, I will miss you. I know I am going to jail or get the death sentence.”

The confession seems nonchalant and naive and rather than expressing his shock at the event, which would be the normal response for most people, Derek is more concerned about sharing what he did with facebook members.

And Derek’s facebook followers respond to the photos, “What is happening Derek?” as the event unfolds.

This is as real time as it gets when it comes exposing personal information that should not be run on social networking sites. With or without their knowledge, Medina’s account of the murder ran for five hours before the police requested Facebook to take it down.

This is a little scary because rather than hear the news on TV or read it online, presenting of inappropriate or personal news via social networking channels has consequences on the family of the victim, particularly her 10-year old child who was hiding in a bedroom closet when this happened.

Medina, who is an author, a martial arts experts and really quite talented in many ways was a church going acolyte and volunteer. His priest at the Episcopal Church he and Jennifer Alfonso attended said that Derek was a complex person just like anyone else.

The accused is also an author of ebooks, and is sponsored by companies like Amazon.com and Barnes and Nobles.

There was nothing that stood out about Derek and the sequence of events was certainly unexpected, said his family members.
