Two men thought they came up with the most innovative way of trafficking cigarettes into Singapore without paying taxes – by concealing them inside Roman pillars.
Unfortunately, they were outsmarted by the Singapore Customs who raided their warehouse. Besides finding the contraband cigarettes in the unfinished pillars, they also uncovered packets stuffed inside concrete balls.
Customs siezed, in total, 54,000 packets of cigarettes which would sell in the black market for SGD$500,000. That amount of cigarettes costs SGD$415,000 in taxes.
Customs said that it was the first time such a smuggling tactic was caught.
The men were jailed for three years each for their crime.
