On Long Island’s North Shore in Suffok County, New York USA is a wonderful institution called the Cinema Arts Centre (CAC) http://www.cinemaartscentre.org/. Founded by Vic Skolnick and his partner Charlotte Sky, it was run by them with their son Dylan Skolnick joining later. Sadly, the Cinema announced that on Thursday, June 10th Vic Skolnick died at his home in Centerport.
CAC filmgoers will know Vic Skolnick from his introductions to many of the screenings. He was funny, opinionated and warm. I didn’t necessarily care for his leftwing opinions but they were entertaining.
Although I disapprove of CAC’s receipt of taxpayer funds from New York State, it is a worthy institution I support as much as I can. As a libertarian, I favor the separation of state from culture just as I support the separation of church and state.
It is a wonderful cultural institution bringing independent and foreign films to Long Islanders. They also have receptions for speakers such as directors and actors, most recently Celeste Holm from All About Eve. There are regular music presentations. There are special film festivals. Local screenwriters meet there. The cafe is spacious with light menu items and beverages. Long Island Press readers dubbed it Best Movie Theater on Long Island.
Vic Skolnick’s life work with the Cinema Arts Centre shows how a person can impact the lives of so many others in a positive way. -30-
