Civil Defence volunteers provide support during Eid and Tremors

Srinagar, November 09 (Scoop News) – An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 occured on Eid-ul Azha, 7th November 2011 at 5.29 PM with epicenter in Hindukush Afganistan.

Another earthquake of magnitude 3.8 occurred during the mid-night of 6th/7th Nov with epicentre near the border of Uttarakhand and China. The earthquakes were felt in many parts of the country including J&K. People in some parts of Srinagar panicked and ran out of their houses, as some miscreants spread the rumor that another bigger earthquake would occur. Civil Defence volunteers came out in various areas and interacted with the people and counsel them that earthquakes cannot be predicted and there is no reason to panic. These Civil Defence volunteer had recently undergone disaster preparedness trainings organised by Addl. DG Police, Civil Defence, Home Guards & Auxiliary Police and therefore we were able to counter the rumor.

Earlier on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha 50 Civil Defence volunteers led by their group leader, Rafiq Ahmed Baba of Habak were deputed on the instructions of ADGP CD/HG, to assist the District Administration at Hazratbal for management of the traffic and crowd and they also helped old and infirm people at Dargah Hazratbal. People appreciated the gesture of the volunteers in helping others.
