Recently, there has been racial controversy that had hit Hillary Clinton’s campaign hard. Former New York Representative Geraldine Ferraro had resigned from the Hillary Clinton campaign. She was a top ally and fundraiser for Clinton.
Ferraro said that the reason that Barack Obama is in the current position is that he is black. She said that if Obama was either a woman or a white man, he would not have made it to being the Democratic frontrunner. That comment had drawn fire from Obama’s campaign.
David Axelrod, the top strategist for Obama’s campaign demanded that Clinton sever ties from Ferraro.
Clinton said that the comment from Ferraro was hurtful. Afterwards, Ferraro resigned. During an interview, Ferraro said she was not being racist. She said she was stating a fact.
Clinton said that both campaigns should be focused on the issues.
At the Newspaper Publishers Association, Clinton would address the African-American community about comments from Ferraro about Obama and race.
“I said yesterday that I rejected what she said and I certainly do repudiate it and regret deeply what it was said,” Clinton addressed. She added: “She doesn’t speak for the campaign, she doesn’t speak for any of my positions, and she has resigned.”
Asides from Ferraro’s comment, Clinton talked about prison sentences and HIV prevention. In regards to HIV, Clinton said that preventative measures must be taken in regards to those at risk.
In prison sentencing, Clinton talked about how the mandatory prison sentences which differ between crack and powder cocaine is racist. She would promise to examine the prison system in the United States let alone New York.
On Thursday, Clinton will continue to campaign in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania will have its primary on April 22.
