The topic of gun control has once again become an issue due to the school shooting that had taken place a few days ago at Northern Illinois University where a former student gunned down five people before turning it on himself. Recently, US Democratic presidential hopeful and co-frontrunner Barack Obama said that the United States must eradicate gun-related violence. However, he did add that the Second Amendment rights are individual rights and not group rights.
While making a campaign stop, Clinton was going to focus on the economy and health care. Recently, Clinton’s campaign launched a pamphlet detailing that Obama’s health care plan was not universal. Senator Ted Kennedy, D-Massachusetts who endorsed Obama attacked Clinton for the pamphlet. But, the non-partisan group known as FactCheck.org supports Hillary’s claim.
Some in the crowd asked Clinton on the issue of gun control. She would answer that question by telling a story about her when she was holding a rifle while she was in the backwoods of Arkansas.
“I’ve hunted. My father taught me how to hunt. I went duck hunting in Arkansas. I remember standing in that cold water, so cold, at first light. I was with a bunch of my friends, all men. The sun’s up, the ducks are flying and they are playing a trick on me. They said, ‘we’re not going to shoot, you shoot.’ They wanted to embarrass me. The pressure was on. So I shot, and I shot a banded duck and they were surprised as I was,” Clinton said telling the crowd an old story.
One person in the crowd would use that opportunity to make a jab at current United States Vice President Dick Cheney. The older gentleman asked: “As long as you know how to use a gun, would you be willing to show Vice President Cheney how to use this?”
Almost everybody laughed. One notable news report was on Cheney and how he accidentally shot his hunting partner in the face with a rifle during a hunting trip. Cheney has been the focus of many hunting related jokes afterwards.
“That was good, that was really good,” Clinton complimented. She then said it reminded her about the Bush Administration. She added: “You know I couldn’t believe that, I really thought that I have gotten over being totally outraged by the Bush Administration.”
She would continue with, “Once he (Cheney) is out of office, the Secret Service is not around to protect people from him. We better be careful about where he goes hunting. Safety protocol would be useful, don’t’ you think?”
On the issue of gun control, Hillary would bring up a story about her hunting days and exchanging hunting jokes with Dick Cheney. Hillary Clinton joins many that have used Dick Cheney as the focus of guns and hunting related jokes.
