On Wednesday, March 19, on the fifth anniversary of the war in Iraq, US Democratic frontrunner Senator Barack Obama of Illinois launched another offensive against co-frontrunner Senator Hillary Clinton of New York. Obama continued to bring up how Clinton voted for the war in Iraq. He also faults Clinton for opposing the war when she had started her bid for the US Presidency.
In short, Obama said that Clinton cannot be trusted to make sure that the war in Iraq is ended. This was at a speech in front of Fort Bragg, North Carolina. North Carolina is supposed to be having its primaries in the near future after Pennsylvania.
Fort Bragg is one of the major US military installations in the United States. The 82nd Airborne Unit and the Army Green Berets are stationed at Fort Bragg.
However, the major primary is on April 22, in Pennsylvania. North Carolina has its primary on May 2.
Obama told the crowd at Fort Bragg to ask themselves: “Who do you trust to end a war: someone who opposed the war from the beginning, or someone who started opposing it when they started preparing a run for president?”
Today is the fifth year anniversary of the war in Iraq. While U.S. President George W. Bush and GOP nominee Senator John McCain of Arizona praise the war in Iraq, Democratic frontrunners Obama and Clinton say it Iraq is not worth it.
Throughout the nation, many have protested against the war. A recent poll by CBS News said that a majority of Americans say that Iraq is not worth it.
While Clinton says that she is opposed to the war, Obama cites himself as the only true anti-war candidate. However, Texas Representative Ron Paul who looks to “still” be in the race is also considered an anti-war candidate. Out of all the Republicans, Paul was the only one with an anti-war stance.
Obama once again criticized Clinton for authorizing Bush to use force in Iraq. He also took the opportunity to “play” with McCain. While Obama and Clinton are still fighting it out, McCain has already cemented his GOP nomination. Recently, McCain took a tour of the Middle East and look at Iraq.
McCain mistakenly said that Iran was training Al-Qaeda operatives in Iraq. However, Independent Democratic Senator Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut had to correct McCain in saying that Iran was training Shiite militants. Democrats quickly attacked McCain on the gaffe in regards to Iran.
Not only does Obama go on the offensive against Clinton, he also goes on the offensive against McCain. Iraq is the one issue that could make or break McCain’s candidacy as it has been his main platform.
