Leh, September 30(Scoop News)- The President, Cooperative Marketing Society, Leh Phuntsog Wangchuk said that the Co-oprative Marketing Society (CMS) Leh is committed to supply 1500 quintals of onion to the Army during 2013-14 under Negotiated Contract Agreement. He said that in view of the prevailing exorbitantly high rates of onion all over the country, farmers may be tempted to sell their onion produce in the open market and to the vegetable vendors from outside for on-time-profit instead of supplying these to their regular, reliable and sustainable consumer –the Army – through the Farmer’s Co-operative Societies.
In the event of such deviation by the farmers and the consequent failure of the society to fulfill the commitment, the Army may discontinue the “Negotiated Contract Agreement” with Farmers’ Co-oprative Societies for the supply of vegetables, milk and fodder in future, Wangchuk said.
Phuntsog further said that to meet the cost of damages of the risk- purchases by the Army, if any; and to secure against the un-wanted situation, the ‘General Body’ of the Society in their meeting held on 17th August passed a resolution and decided that 25% of the payments due to the farmers will be withheld by the Society till the commitment of the supply of onion to the Army is fulfilled.
In this context, he appealed all the farmers to fully co-operate with the Society in this endeavour in their own interest and ensure supply of onion to the Army as per the commitment.
