Mehbooba, accompanied by party general secretary Mohammad Dilawar Mir, was prevented by a group of angry young men from entering the home of Rathers even though the family pleaded with them not to obstruct the leaders. The young men were agitating against the atrocities committed by police last night by using teargas shells and lathies to beat the protestors including women and children. Mehbooba and Mir however had a meeting with the father of the deceased and other family members. They conveyed their condolences and expressed their solidarity with the family of the victim in this hour of profound grief and crisis.
Mehbooba said this government has promoted a culture of impunity in the state through its inaction and incompetence. “Be it killing of innocents by security forces or police, instances of gross corruption and malpractices by ministers and officials or crimes like the killing of Haji Yusuf this government has adopted a standard practice of announcing meaningless probes to take heat off the moment” she said. No probe has been taken to its logical conclusion but this attitude has resulted in serious erosion of credibility of all institutions of the state and Omar Abdullah for sheer lust of power is inflicting incalculable damage to the long term interests of people, Mehbooba added.
The PDP president said since day one the present government has been able only to dismantle whatever little the state had been able to achieve by way of restoration of peace or administrative systems. By making young men vulnerable once again to state excesses the government has put the future of the state at stake, she regretted and said the long rope that the people of J&K have given to NC could finally snap if Omar Abdullah’s crime against people continued.
State secretary Javed Ahmed Beig, Ashaq Hussain Khan and other leaders were also present and speak on this occasion.
Mehbooba and Dilawar later visited Boniyar to condole the death of a local businessman Mohammad Sadiq Khan who had recently been killed in Rafiabad area. Expressing their deep shock at the brutal killing of Sadiq the PDP leaders called for speeding up probe in to the murder. They said it was deeply worrying that police had failed to take action in this case reportedly under political pressure. “Inability to take action by police in such cases could lead to lawlessness and only add to the insecurity generated by lack of accountability of security forces for their acts of omission and commission” they said.
