Coffee production increases
Coffee production in the Northern Malawi, a country in Southern Africa has increased due to increase of the price of the crop.
According to Harrison Kalua the General Manager of Smallholder Farmers Trust, many farmers have been planting more trees for more than four consecutive years.
“We are expecting more production this year. However, it is not even enough to feed our market which want even more coffee,” he lamented.
He said many countries have liked the flavour and taste of the coffee and want more tonnage.
Kalua, however, could not mention the countries which buy the coffee.
Mzuzu coffee is grown in the highlands of the Northern Region of Malawi.
The region experiences heavy rainfall and has both cold and hot weather in some months of the year.
Many farmers have more than 2,000 trees of coffee.
