SUBJECT: Jennifer Carr Ties Single Game Rebounding Mark as Wilmington Women’s Basketball Snaps Four Game Skid

NEWARK, Del. – – Jennifer Carr tied the single game record with 21 rebounds in leading the Wilmington University women’s basketball team to a 70-44 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Georgian Court on Wednesday night at the WU Athletics Complex.
The win snapped a four game losing streak for the Wildcats (2-9, 1-4 CACC) while also earning the team’s first win at home this year. Jasmine Lee collected another double-double for the Wildcats while Tahira Matthews secured a double-double of her own to lead the Lions (0-9, 0-5 CACC).
The Wildcats sprinted out of the gates with a 6-0 lead and never looked back, leading wire-to-wire to pick up their first CACC victory of the year. Another 6-0 run pushed the Wildcats lead to its largest of the first half, 25-16, with 8:15 remaining on the board. Tenicia Spence hit a jumper to again with the Wildcats a nine-point lead with 6:10 to play before settling on a 30-25 advantage at the halftime break.
Cari Callaway hit one of her two three-pointer to open the second half and an eight point lead before she came back down and hit another three-pointer for a 38-27 lead with 17:12 to play in regulation.
A pair of Lee layups bookended a 10-0 run by the Wildcats, giving them their largest lead of the game at that point, 54-32 with 6:58 showing on the scoreboard. A Callaway jumper with 3:46 left stretched the lead to 25 points before a final foul shot by Carr gave the Wildcats their largest lead of the game, and the final point of the game, at 70-44.
Carr added five points to her 21 rebounds while Lee scored a game high 21 points to go with 10 rebounds, five of which came on the offensive glass. Callaway poured in 16 points, shooting 7-of-11 from the field and 2-of-3 from three-point land.
The Wildcats shot 42.4 percent from the floor as a team while holding the Lions to a 26.4 percent clip defensively. The Wildcats outrebounded the Lions, 61-44, for the game, 42-25, on the defensive glass.
Matthews led the Lions with 17 points and 13 rebounds off the bench. Ten of her 13 rebounds came on the offensive glass. Matthews joined the Lions’ 1,000-career point club on Wednesday night, needing only four points coming into tonight’s contest.
The Wildcats have one more contest in the 2014 calendar year as they head to NCAA Division III Hood on Saturday for a nonconference contest. Saturday’s tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
SUBJECT: Ponzo-Meek’s Career High Leads Wilmington Men’s Basketball to Third Straight Victory

NEWARK, Del. – – Tyaire Ponzo-Meek set a new career mark with 35 points in leading the Wilmington University men’s basketball team to its third straight victory, an 82-74 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Georgian Court on Wednesday night at the WU Athletics Complex.
The sophomore’s career night came with hitting six three-pointers and going 9-of-12 from the foul line, all with shooting 10-of-16 from the floor. Ponzo-Meek scored 22 of his 35 in the second half, shooting 6-of-9 from the floor and 3-of-5 from three-point territory in the process. The 35 points ties the third best mark in the program’s NCAA era (2004-05) as Taureen Temple scored 44 points at Dominican in 2006.
Holding for the last shot of the half, the Wildcats (3-7, 2-2 CACC) turned the ball over and the Lions’ (2-9, 0-5 CACC) Michael Pierre banked home a half court shot, beating the buzzer to cut the visitors’ deficit to 35-34 going into the break.
The Lions took their biggest lead of the night with 15:42 remaining in regulation before the Wildcats started the comeback. Ponzo-Meek went on a 9-0 run of his own to give the Wildcats a 49-44 lead with 12:04 to play and the Wildcats never looked back.
Tajee Almon put the Wildcats up six with 9:02 to play before a Kevin Ohen three-pointer gave the Wildcats a 65-58 lead with 6:13 remaining in regulation. The lions cut the deficit to three points but a three pointer by Ponzo-Meek, and a foul shot by Ohen quickly gave the Wildcats another seven point advantage.
Ta’Vaune Griffin put the stamp on the victory with 2:01 remaining, emphatically slamming home a missed three-pointer by Shai Henry to put the Wildcats ahead 74-65. From there, the Wildcats went 7-of-8 from the foul line to close out the Lions.
Ohen scored 11 of his 13 in the second half, also going 3-of-5 from deep. He finished 4-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-7 from deep while also grabbing five rebounds. Griffin scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench. Valentino Thompson and Almon each added eight points off the bench.
The Wildcats have a chance at four wins in around when they host Merrimack on Saturday for another game at the WU Athletics Complex. The nonconference bout will start at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
