Postgame Notes – Maryland vs. Stanford

Stanford 45, Maryland 21

SANTA CLARA, Calif. –

Kicking It Off: Maryland fell 45-21 to Stanford in the 2014 Foster Farms Bowl Tuesday evening at Levi’s Stadium in the first all-time matchup between the two programs. Maryland finishes the year 7-6, while Stanford finishes with an 8-5 record. Maryland’s all-time bowl record falls to 11-13-1.

Sack Master: With a sack midway through the first quarter, defensive lineman Andre Monroe became Maryland’s all-time sack leader. Monroe entered the game tied with Mike Corvino (1979-82) for the program record. Monroe has 25.0 career sacks with 10.5 coming this season. His 2014 season total is the eighth-highest single-season mark in program history.

Take It Back: Defensive back William Likely scored his first career kickoff return touchdown Tuesday night. Likely is one of five Maryland players all-time to return a kick 100 yards for a score with the last coming from Stefon Diggs in 2012 against Virginia and is Maryland’s longest kickoff return in a bowl game topping Torrey Smith’s 99-yard return against Nevada in the 2008 Humanitarian Bowl. Likely’s return is the first kickoff return for a touchdown since Diggs took one back 99 yards at North Carolina on Nov. 24, 2012.

It is the second 100-yard return in the San Francisco bowl’s history. John Ross from Washington had one last season.

Diggs Breaks Records: With 10 catches for 138 yards, Stefon Diggs set Maryland bowl records in both statistical categories. The previous record for receiving yards and receptions was held by Charlie White. White had eight catches for 126 yards against Minnesota in the 1977 Hall of Fame Bowl.

For Diggs, it marked his fourth 100-yard receiving game of the season and seventh of his career. His four 100-yard games this season are tied for the second-most all-time with five other players. His seven 100-yard games in his career are tied for the second-highest total with three others.

Short Yardage: Running back Wes Brown scored his sixth touchdown of the season on a one-yard plunge in the second quarter. Brown’s six rushing touchdowns are the most for a Maryland running back since D.J. Adams totaled 11 during the 2010 season. Of his six touchdowns, five have come from one yard out.

50-50 Club: Wide receiver Deon Long hauled in his 50th reception of the season early in the first quarter. With the catch, Long joined Stefon Diggs with 50 or more receptions. Diggs and Long are the first Maryland receivers to hit the 50-reception total in the same season since Jermaine Lewis and Geroy Simon had 66 and 54 catches, respectively, in 1995. It is only the fourth time in program history that two or more Maryland receivers have totaled 50 or more receptions. Besides Lewis and Simon in 1995, Lewis (52) and Russ Weaver (69) hit the mark in 1993, and Marcus Badgett (75), Richie Harris (56) and Dan Prunzik (52) hit the mark in 1992.

Offensive Notes: Quarterback C.J. Brown rushed for his team-leading eighth touchdown of the season.

Defensive Notes: Defensive lineman Darius Kilgo recovered his team-best fourth fumble of the season … defensive back Anthony Nixon tied a season high with eight tackles.
