The 2009 Bowl season got under way today with Wyoming beating Fresno State in double overtime. The final score was 35-28 with the defense of Wyoming stopping Fresno State’s Ryan Mathews on three rushing attempts from the one yard line in the first overtime.
Mathews had a good game scoring two touchdowns and rushing for 144 yards on 31 carries, but fumbled in the middle of the fourth quarter which led Wyoming to a game tying drive. Mathews led the nation in rushing average at 151.3 yards per game.
Wyoming’s Austyn Carta-Samuels, Mountain West’s Freshman of the Year was named offensive MVP. He was 17 of 31 attempts for 201 yards passing with three touchdown passes and one interception.
Mitch Unrein was named defensive MVP. Wyoming’s tackle forced and recovered Mathews fumble.
