Mecate and Dechow Advance to Semifinals; ODU Sixth After Day One at Midlands

NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion redshirt junior Chris Mecate (141 lbs.) and redshirt sophomore Jack Dechow (184 lbs.) advanced to the semifinals of the 52nd Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, each recording wins in the quarterfinals Monday afternoon.

The championship will continue with Session III Tuesday, Dec. 30 at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The session will begin at noon, and the finals will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will air on the Big Ten Network.

Old Dominion tallied 49.5 points after the first two sessions, which ranks sixth in the tournament featuring 50 teams.

After day one of the Midlands Championships, the Monarchs placed two wrestlers in the semifinal round of their respective weight class. One other wrestler also made it to the quarterfinals of their respective weight class.

Chris Mecate advanced to the semifinal bout by taking down three wrestlers on the day at 141 pounds. Mecate received a bye in round one of the championship bracket and took down Tanner Cahill from Bloomsburg by a 6-2 decision in the second round. In round three, Mecate won his second overtime match of the season, defeating NCAA qualifer Chuck Zeisloft from Rider by a 4-3 decision.

Returning All-American Jack Dechow was the second Monarch to make it to the semifinal round. In round one of the 184-pound bracket, Dechow defeated Tanner Lynde from Purdue by a 12-2 major decision. He continued to shine, as he won by fall over NCAA West Regional third-place finisher Konner Witt of Air Force in 4:57. Dechow pulled out an overtime win in the third round over NCAA qualifier Austin Gabel of Virginia Tech, winning by a 3-1 decision in tie-breaker one to advance to the semifinal round.

Tristan Warner suffered his first loss of the season (12-1) after falling to All-American Pierce Harger from Northwestern by a 5-0 decision in the quarterfinal round of the 165-pound bracket. He started the day with an 11-6 decision over freshman Bryce Martin from Indiana. In the championship round two, Warner took down Emery Parker from Illinois by a 4-0 decision, marking his third shutout by decision of the season. He then went on to defeat EWL Champion and NCAA qualifier Conor Brennan of Rider by a 3-1 decision in round three before falling to Harger in the quarterfinals.

Kevin Beazley, Jake Henderson, Alexander Richardson and T.C. Warner, despite losing in the championship bracket, advanced to the consolation bracket sixth round.
