Corvallis, Ore. – The 17th-ranked Oregon State wrestling team will compete in the Reno Tournament of Champions this Sunday in Reno, Nev.
Action starts at 9 a.m. PST; the championship and consolation finals matches begin at 6 p.m.
Billed by the organizers as “the toughest tournament in the USA, the field includes the Beavers; Pacific-12 Conference opponents Stanford, Arizona State, Cal Poly, Boise State and Cal State-Bakersfield, and Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Ohio University, Wyoming and Utah Valley.
Also competing are Adams State, Clackamas Community College, Colorado Mesa University, Grand Canyon, Menlo College, Minnesota State-Mankato, Montana State-Northern, Simon Fraser, Southern Oregon and Upper Iowa.
It’s the penultimate competition of the calendar year for the Beavers (3-0, 2-0 Pac-12). They will also wrestle at the Aloha Open in Honolulu on Dec. 30 before taking a short break.
The Beavers will take about 20-25 wrestlers. Team totals will be kept; only one competitor will be counted toward the team total in each weight class.

Ohio Travels to Reno for Tournament of Champions
Bobcats one of 21 teams competing
Athens, Ohio – The Ohio wrestling team (3-2, 0-1 MAC) will travel to Reno, Nev. to compete in the Reno Tournament of Champions in the Reno Events Center. Preliminary rounds will begin at 9 a.m.
The Bobcats will send 14 grapplers to the competition, four of which are nationally ranked.
Ohio enters the tournament following a 25-18 loss to No. 5 Missouri on Dec. 13 in the Convocation Center. Both Kagan Squire (Wadsworth, Ohio) and Harrison Hightower (Strongsville, Ohio) picked up victories at the meet.
Notable Entries
• Tywan Claxton (South Euclid, Ohio) returns from his first loss of the season against No. 6 Drake Houdashelt. The redshirt junior has claimed first place at every tournament he has competed in this season and holds a 13-1 record.
• Redshirt junior Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio) is currently 13-1 on the season and will be chasing his eighth consecutive win for the Bobcats. In his last outing, the redshirt junior recorded a 14-0 major decision.
• Redshirt junior Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio) recorded a victory in his last outing following a Missouri forfeit at the 197-class. He enters the competition with a 12-3 record, and has claimed second and third place in previous tournaments this season.
• In his last outing, Hightower earned his 10th triumph of the season with an 11-4 decision over Missouri’s Cody Johnston. The redshirt senior has placed second and third in his last two tournament appearances.
• Redshirt junior Spartak Chino (Wheaton, Ill.) placed fourth place in lone tournament appearance this season and currently holds a 6-4 record. In his last outing, Chino fell to Missouri’s No. 12 Joseph LaVallee in a 3-1 decision.
• Redshirt junior Andrew Romanchik (Independence, Ohio) has placed fifth in his last two tournaments, and holds a 13-7 record overall between three weight classes.
• Junior KeVon Powell (Romeoville, Ohio) earned fifth place in his last tournament and currently holds a 6-4 record.
Next Up for the Bobcats
The Bobcats will begin the new year in Clarion, Pa. as they take on the Clarion Golden Eagles on Jan. 8 in the Waldo S. Tippin Gym beginning at 7 p.m.
