Both the Congo Army and the pro-government Mai Mai militia have both been fighting against the rebel forces led by dissident General Laurent Nkunda. However, they have been fighting on separate fronts. But the Mai Mai was hindering the Congo army’s campaign against General Nkunda’s forces in the Kivu region according to an senior army officer during an interview.
Colonel Delphin Kahimbi had stated he has given Kabamba Masereka the leader of the Mai Mai forty-eight hours to law down his weapons and to turn over his men under his command. Kahimbi is demanding that the leader of the Mai Mai integrate the men under his command into the regular army.
It says that the refugees fleeing are the result of clashes between the local militias and General Nkunda’s forces. Refugees have fled towards a nearby town of Rutshuru. Close to the borders of Rwanda and Uganda, government forces and General Nkunda’s men have been fighting in Bukima.
The report says that the army’s current strategy is all about harassing General Nkunda and his men by cutting off supply lines across the border. General Nkunda had been given a deadline to disarm. However, he has ignored the deadline. But, the deadline has been extended to a date that has not been disclosed.
Almost four-hundred thousand people have been displaced. Many have escaped and many more will try to escape the violence as a result of the clashes of these factions.
