Congress concedes defeat in Gujarat polls

NEW DELHI: The counting of votes in Indian Gujarat polls is still in progress on Sunday morning.

According to an India news channel, India’s ruling Congress party conceded defeat in the Gujarat poll on Sunday as vote-counting trends showed that the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was heading for a strong majority.

"It is a great victory for him, it is a remarkable victory," Abhishek Singhvi, national spokesman of Congress said while talking to a local news television channel, referring to Narendra Modi, the controversial BJP chief minister of Gujarat. "We congratulate him."

Narendra Modi is likely to be Chief Minister for the third time.

According to the initial reports, in 182-member house, BJP succeeded in clinching 119 seats, Congress came up with 60 and three seats were won over by candidates of other parties.

At least 92 seats are required for any party to claim government.

His comments came as TV channels said BJP was leading in 118 of the state’s 182 constituencies while Congress was ahead in about 60 seats.

Gujarat had polls in two phases on December 11 and 16; in the first phase, the turnout was 60 percent and 63 percent of the total eligible voters came to cast votes in the second phase.

Modi is accused of maladministration over the security of Muslims in the Hindu-Muslim riots of 2002.
