Representative Jerome Nadler (D-NY) today introduced H.R. 1531. The resolution would:
- Prevent President Bush from pardoning criminal activity of persons in his administration in the last 90 days of his tenure (there are currently 59 days remaining);
- Establish a special commission or select committee to investigate potential illegal activities of Bush administration officials;
- Call for the incoming Attorney General to appoint an Independent Counsel to investigate and prosecute any such illegal activities.
This Resolution could be construed as the first step toward impeachment hearings of the President of the United States. During impeachment hearings, there can be no use of Executive Privilege to prevent aides from testifying before Congress under oath.
This Resolution could be the beginning of a process for which the voters in the United States and indeed the peoples of the world have been waiting.
