Itis now official. Alarge group of people that gathered at Njamba park in Malawi chose people who in turn have asked the High Court for judicial review on arrest of Members of Parliament(MPs) who are refusing to discuss the national budget of 2007/2008.
At a press conference which they converged, the concerned citizens said that the MPs have failed the task of properly representing their constituents.
" Medicine that we need in hospitals is bought using the budget.Money for buying inputs is in the budget.Money to pay the army, the police and the civil service is in the budget. If they are refusing to discuss and pass it ,people will suffer," they said.
They said it is just proper for them to be arrested because they do not love their country.
They say their seats should be declared vacant to pave way for bye- elections.
The opposition in Malawi is saying it cannot discuss the budget unless the section 65 which gives power to the speaker to declare the seats vacant is discussed.
Most members of Parliament who are cabinet ministers defected to the opposition and were about to have their seats declared vacant when they got an injuction from the High Court of Malawi.
THis angered the opposition and vowed never to discuss the budget unless the injuction is lifted.
