22 october 2012 : As per the statistical reports of CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) it has been found that the ricotta cheese spoiled with Listeria bacteria is related to 14 clinical complications and at least a death.
This imported Italian ricotta salata cheese has been linked to clinical illness in around 11 states. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has found the bacterial strain Listeria monocytogenes in an uncut cheese sample.
Ricotta salata is not the same as the normal soft ricotta cheese as it is salty in taste and white colored cheese that is made from the pasteurized sheep’s milk.
Most of the individuals consuming this cheese are unaware of its origin and manufacturer as this is usually distributed to large restaurants and retail industries for use in small packages or servings.
It is advised that the customers should not consume the cheese opened about for more than a month; but the CDC has approved the use of this cheese for around four months as it has got a good shelf life.
The infection with the Listeria microbe though very rare is found to be really very detrimental and deadly than other delirious pathogens such as E.coli and Salmonella and affects mostly the elderly, pregnant women and those with weak immune system.
Although, it is not very clear about how many deaths have been resulted from the intake of tainted ricotta cheese but, this is found to very detrimental outbreak of Listeria infection.
