Contaminated ground beef being recalled

Cargill, the agro-business giant announced on Saturday that it is recalling more than 1million pounds of ground beef that may be possibly contaminated with E.coli. The ground beef was produced October 8-11 at Cargill Meat Solutions’ plant in Wyalusing, Pennsylvania and distributed to retailers. The contamination of the meat was brought to the notification of Cargill by the State Agricultural Dept found samples produced on Oct 8 to be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause severe bloody diarrhea and stomach-aches. Infants, aged people and immuno-compromised individuals in particular are highly susceptible to these infections. Improper butchering or processing practices may have lead to the transmission of the bacterium to meat samples.
