This controversial bill that would introduce possible DNA tests to foreigners wishing to join their relatives has been passed by both France’s National Assembly and the Senate. According to those that support this controversial bill state that it will make it faster for applicants applying for real and cite European nations that have similar laws.
However, the critics state that the law is racist. They bring into question the use of genetics as a means of citizenship.
Through the lower National Assembly, it was adopted by 282 to 235 votes while it was 185 to 136 votes in the French Senate. The bill due to the controversy behind it has caused thousands to protest through the streets of France the previous weekend. This bill would make the conditions tougher for immigrants to be reunited with their family members in France as they would be subjected to DNA testing.
Brice Hortefeux, France’s Immigration Minister states that twelve other countries in Europe have already implemented similar bills.
Despite that, critics such as opposition Socialists claim that the principles of human rights and not genetics should be used to determine who gets visa. They plan to challenge the measure in the Constitutional Court.
Arnaud Montebourg states: “This law violates the fundamental principles of the republic which do not define family and affiliation by biology.”
