Despite the strenuous efforts put in by the close relatives of his family and laudatory measures taken by all the political parties across the spectra to save the life of Sarabjit Singh, his fate is still hanging in balance. This is because of the fact that India has limited options in the matter and Pakistan has to show leniency if he were to be saved.
Sarbjit’s sister Dalbir Gaur called on Congress General Secretary, Mr.Rahul Gandhi to seek his help to take up the matter with the Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh and Congress President Mrs.Sonia Gandhi. In the Rajya Sabah all the members joined together to seek a resolution against his death sentence. This had prompted the Chairman of the House, Mr.Ansari to say that he would request the Government to respond to the issue. This issue was again raised during the question hour by Mrs.Brinda Karat.
Responding to the above, the Minister of State for External Affairs, Mr.Anand Sharma informed the Media that the government had conveyed the sentiments of the Indian People to Pakistan and requested for clemency on humanitarian ground. The request for clemency gains ground because of the seriousness allegation of mistaken identity. In this context, all the aspects would have to be again scrutinized before effecting this punishment because of the irreversible nature of this punishment.
Sarbjit Singh was sentenced to death on charges of spying and carryout bomb explosions and his petition for mercy was rejected by the Pakistan President.
