Country star, Ty Herndon, has confirmed today that he is gay, and it brings new meaning to the singer’s latest album, “Lies I Told Myself,” released in 2013. Herndon discloses that the biggest lie he had been telling himself is “that he couldn’t be gay in country music.”
Herndon stated, “I’ve dreamed about being in country music since I was 6 years old. It’s my life, it’s what I do, it’s who I am, and I went to great lengths to cover up that fact to become a country star.”
Rumors surfaced regarding his sexuality back in 1995, as an undercover male police officer alleged that the star had exposed him while he was in a park.
Herndon said of the allegations, “I wish I had a great recall or memory about that. I believe I had been up for like 6 days doing drugs and the night and the day was really a huge blur to me.”
Herndon who is now fully clean and sober said, “I’m looking forward to my future with my partner of five years, joking with Entertainment Tonight’s Nischelle Turner that he hoped a proposal might follow this reveal; and adding, “God, I hope he asks me right after this interview!”
Herndon was candid with Nischelle about many aspects of his life from his former drug use, his failed marriages and his current relationship. He also stated that both of his ex-wives were very much aware of his sexuality. He also indicated that he had confided in a lot of people around him that he trusted at the time and it was like, “Hey, you know this about me but the world doesn’t. I’m going to need to call on your services for a little while, he confessed;” and adding, “It was unfortunate I had to do that, but I had to do it to have my career. I’m standing on some pretty solid legs now, so I get to tell my truth today.”
Herndon also stated that he wanted children some day and also that he wanted to be married one day too. For now though Herndon says he’s thrilled to see increasing levels of acceptance in Nashville.
Herndon added, “Traditionally in country music, we don’t see a lot of support for the LGBT community, but it’s changing so much; and saying, “Nashville is changing so much. I mean my goodness…Kacey Musgrave’s won Song of the Year for lyrics ‘follow your arrow, wherever it points’ and two amazing songwriters that happened to be gay wrote that song.”
Herndon added, “It gives me a lot of hope that Nashville is ready for this. I get to be free today. I’m born again today, and I feel like I’m not going to have any trouble sleeping tonight.”
