Courier companies are protesting the arrangements at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad. Important documents and demand drafts are stuck at the airport, courier services said, imperilling financial transactions worth crores of rupees. Menzies Aviation handles cargo for the airport operator, GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited. Courier organisations say they are being charged exorbitantly. Demurrage charges are higher than those at the Begumpet airport. Menzies collects up to Rs 1.20 per kg for inbound cargo and 75 paise for outbound parcels. The minimum charge is Rs 145.
Courier companies have to pay security and screening charges depending on the weight of the parcel. The demurrage charges are doubled in case of delay. “Menzies collects charges on par with international standards, but the service is very poor.” said Mr B.B. Subramanya Swamy, executive member of AP Courier Services. Association. “We used to collect parcels within an hour of the flight at Begumpet. It takes six hours at the new airport,” said Mr Mario Jude Lewis, association general secretary. GHIAL officials said they had not received any complaint from courier firms
