The Communist Party of Nepal (CPN),Maoists, are surging ahead in the Nepal Constituent Assembly elections, indicating that the people of Nepal have voted for change and have given a chance to the ‘Maoists’ to lead the country.
Emerging trends show that the Maoists party has got every chance to become the largest party in the first-past-.the post system. It seems that the ‘Maoists’ have peoples’ support throughout Nepal, except Central Terai, where Madhesi Parties are doing better.
Out of the 40 seats for which results have been declared, the CPN (Maoists) have won 25 seats, the Nepali Congress (NC) and the Nepal Communist Party-United Mraxist-Leninist (UML), got six seats each, the Nepal Workers and Peasants Party (NWPP) won in two constituencies and Madhesi Peoples Right Forum, secured one seat.
In more than 100 constituencies where still counting is going on, CPN (Maoists) are leading in 60 seats. Almost all the senior leaders of CPN (Maoists) have won.On the other hand UML has been routed. and many senior leaders of Nepali Congress are trailing behind. The Maoists have also made deep inroads into the traditional strong bases of the Nepali Congress such as Chitwan, Tanahu, Kailali,Kanchanpur and Bake districts.
According to the Chairman of the NCP (Maoists), Mr.Prachanda, the Maoists victory was a mandate for lasting peace, implementation of the Democratic Republic and rapid economic development. His party would work with other major parties during the transition period. It was committed to multi-party coalition and wanted to have a cordial relationship with all the countries of the world, especially with two large countries like India and China.
The approach of the NCP (Maoists), to form a coalition government, despite of having the chance of forming a government of its own, augurs well for the future of Nepal.
