Crime in India

Call center employee raped and murdered by the cabbie
Goan tourist raped and murdered
Women groped upon in Mumbai after a new year party
Convicts in a high profile murder case are still going scot free
Terrorists from umpteen bombing cases that killed hundreds of people all over the country are still not even convicted

This kind of news has become an almost regular feature in our media. Also, have you observed that in many of the crimes committed against less privileged people or committed by high profile people, the perpetrators of the crime almost never get convicted?
Especially, in the case of crimes against women, most people on the road would say its the mistake of the woman upon whom the crime was committed.
Take the recently-in-the-news case of Scarlett Keeling. Agreed, her mother was irresponsible in not taking care of her when she was doing dope and getting wasted… but does that mean any man can take advantage of her? Of course not.
Or when the call center girl was murdered, it was said that it was the mistake of the girl because she was talking on the phone and not keeping tab on where the cabbie was driving her. Conveniently, throw the blame on the mobile phone and the ‘unethical trends’ of the youngsters.

But if one does a root-cause analysis, its not very difficult to find that the problem is with the judiciary.
My question is, why the hell should the victim be held accountable?? Doesn’t she have a right to do what she wants at any time of the day or night? The problem is not with the behaviour of the women or with the soaring hormones of desperate men.
Its the judiciary… if the sentences are handed out to the criminals according to the crime that they’ve done, the next criminal-in-the-making will think twice about committing a crime. The people who drafted our constitution made certain laws to protect the innocent from being convicted but the same laws are being twisted to free the guilty. The way money plays a truant role in the judiciary is appalling. Some of the most high profile and once-respected advocates of the country have fallen prey to the money and power to fight cases for convicts even after being fully aware that they’re guilty. Nobody can do anything about it.
The general public are scared of being hounded if they come forward and give evidence.
The cops are scared of getting transferred
The politicians are scared of losing their jobs
Not one criminal in this country is remotely scared of being convicted for the crimes he’s committed because he knows that the case will drag on until the last day of his death by when he’d have committed enough crimes to keep the court engaged for 2 of his lifetimes.
The govt is now fighting for the pardon of a criminal who’s killed more than 10 people in a single bomb blast. Human right activists are against his hanging. Where were these activists when hundreds of people were being killed by the same person? Did they even raise a whimper against the slow execution of the case? Did they do anything to see that the victims’ kith and kin were compensated well by the government?
Bottomline, until the adage “YOU DO THE CRIME, YOU DO THE TIME” is followed strictly in the country, crimes will continue to happen… irrespective of whether a city closes down at 11.30 pm or at 6 pm.
