As per the records available from home department in Orissa, there is rise in every sort of crime. Life has become insecure and full of perils. Despite the tall claim of present government of Orissa that it has improved policing by setting up a police commissioner ate, it falls flat in the face of number and types of crimes as mentioned in the white paper published by the department of home. It has lent credence to the truth of inefficacy of the present police force in Orissa.
Although the centre has agreed to help the state by giving 64 crore rupees for the modernization of present police force, the data produced by home department gives a dismal picture. According to the report 68,500 cases were registered in 2010. The cases ranged from robbery, murders, armed looting, cheating. Ganjam, among all the 30 districts, stands topper in every sort of crime. Ironically, it is the place, from where Chief Minister, Naveen Pattanik, has been elected.
The figure of atrocities on women is unthinkably high; there are 571 murders for dowry and 41 cases of women’s’ deaths, who committed suicide because of their frustration in marriage for dowry. There are also an equal number of rape cases of women. Violence towards females has gone unchecked.
Maoists’ violence has spread to 19 districts, claiming a very high toll in mass killings, kidnappings and looting. The recent kidnapping of collector of Malkangiri and his subsequent release after the appeasement of Maoist’s demands by the government amply prove this to a greater extent.
