Croatia’s Interior Minister Resigns From Post After Hunting Photos

The pictures of him with Mladen Merkac were published by the Croatian newspapers before Christmas. Former police chief Mladen Merkac is accused of the massacre of many Serbs.

I… offer my apology to all those that might have been harmed,” he said in his resignation letter.

Mr. Merkac has been summoned by the tribunal for international war crimes at The Hague for breaking his parole. While serving as interior minister, Ivica Kirin was charged with the duty of making sure that Mr. Merkac obeyed his parole.

Some of the broken terms not included was Mr. Merkac leaving his hope in Zagreb, Croatia.

I consider (resignation) it a moral act and my duty due to circumstances in which I was involved regarding the case of General Merkac,” he said in the resignation letter.

Mr. Merkac along with other former security figures are accused of being involved in a plan to drive ethnic Serbs from the Krajina region in 1995. He had served as commander of the police special forces.

Over 150 Serb civilians were killed. Mr. Merkac surrendered to the international tribunal in 2004.
