China’s crackdown of the Tibetan demonstrations had brought forth both outcry and condemnation from the international community. However, China’s counter-criticism has mainly been focused towards Tibet’s spiritual leader, His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama.
In the wake of the crackdown on the protests in Tibet, the Dalai Lama had accused China of committing “cultural genocide.” However, China’s Premiere Wen Jiabao fired back at the Dalai Lama accusing him of starting the protests. Wen further accused the Dalai Lama of trying to ruin the Olympic Games which are due to be hosted in Beijing, China.
It is already known that the Tibetan exiles and pro-Tibet independence activists plan to use the Olympic Torch relay points in Tibet to stage their protests. There are also talks that China may bar all live TV broadcasts in Tiananmen Square for the duration of the Olympic Games because of the various staged demonstrations and protests.
Recently, US Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged for an international investigation into the aftermaths of China’s crackdown in Tibet. Pelosi has been one of the China’s sharpest critics, on its human rights record.
Asides from firing back at the Dalai Lama, China’s government has also fired back at Pelosi.
China accused Pelosi of ignoring the “truth” about Tibet.
“The Dalai clique is scheming to take the Beijing Olympics hostage to force the Chinese government to make concessions to Tibet independence,” said the People’s Daily. The People’s Daily is the voice of China’s Communist Party.
“Human rights police’ like Pelosi are habitually bad tempered and ungenerous when it comes to China, refusing to check their facts and find out the truth about the case,” said on a Sunday commentary by the state controlled news agency, Xinhua.
Pelosi had warned China that the rest of the world is watching its actions such as the crackdown on Tibet.
GOP Presidential nominee John McCain said that it was unacceptable for a world power such as China to be conducting such harsh actions.
Tibet is one of the issues looming over China that could be a PR disaster for the Olympics in Beijing.
