The ideal time to be in Barpeta is during Holi. Then the entire town and hundreds of visitors join in the famous Dol Jatra festival.
Darranga
On your way back from Baepeta, take a detour at Rangiya and arrive at Darranga, 50 km from Guwahati. If it is winter time, you will see an exotic little mela –the yearly Bhutan mela. Essentially a trading center, Darranga takes on a colorful look during this event. Bhutanses people come down to the plains to trade and barter for their essentials –salt, dry fish, clothes, and throngs from far and near collect to pick up the curios and knick and knacks that Bhutanese bring to sell. In a sense, almost reminiscent of the American Wild West Days, Darranga throbs with much carousing and spirited living.
