When David Goldman dropped his wife, Bruna, and son, Sean, at the Newark airport for a two-week vacation in her native Brazil in 2004, he didn’t know it would mean the end of his marriage and the last time he would see his son. When Bruna arrived in Brazil, she called David, said their marriage was over and that he would only see Sean again if he signed full custody of the boy over to her. He never signed anything and has been fighting in Brazilian and American courts ever since. His Web site, www.bringseanhome.org tells his story.
So far, David Goldman has had no luck in getting his son back, even after traveling to Brazil numerous times for all of the court hearings in the case. Brazilian judges have ruled against him every time and he has had to return to his New Jersey home alone.
In 2008, Bruna died giving birth to her second child. David Goldman thought that his fight was finally over and that he would be reunited with his son. When he got to Brazil, he realized that Bruna’s new husband, who ironically is a family custody lawyer, was trying to replace David’s name as Sean’s father on his birth certificate with his own. Now Goldman says he is waging a fight against crooked Brazilian courts without the help of his country.
David Goldman created www.bringseanhome.org to raise awareness of his story, to accept donations and to encourage citizens to urge his congresspeople to offer the government’s help.
