Leh,ctober 15 (Scoop News)- For the first time a review meeting on Maternal and Infant Mortality was convened under the head of DC Tsering Angchok who is also the Chairman District health Society Leh in his office today. The purpose of the meeting was to have a system of monthly review and to assess the number of deaths taken place and the reasons so that corrective action may be initiated, says DC.
“The objectives of Maternal Death Rate (MDR)/Infant Death Rate (IDR) are focused on identifying the factors contributing to the delays and the medical causes which lead to these deaths. The process seeks to facilitate key policy makers and programme officers at State/District/Sub District level in identifying the systematic gaps and taking appropriate corrective action at different levels to prevent such deaths in the future,” asserted DC.
Certain reasons were cited for infant deaths that include low birth weight, lack of prompt monitoring, prolong intervention period and delay in handling delivery. DC directed the doctors, especially the gynecologists to have theoretical as well practical knowledge on latest techniques and studies and gave on spot orders for the purchase of required number of ventilators. DC stressed on giving full training to the paramedic staffs in careful handling of newborns and equipments, teaching the mothers the technique of breast feeding which is also a cause for death of babies, take the hygiene issue seriously and impart more health education. DC emphasized on duty specification for gynecologists and to have the required number of 6 gynecologists in SNM hospital on regular basis, besides urged the doctors to be more cautious of their duty and responsibility. DC also reviewed the causes of death of each infant in the district.
Dy. CMO informed that last year the IMR was 20/1000 births and this year by end of Sept. it was 11/1000 births and total of 13 deaths between 0-1 year. He also gave details on Infant Death Audit report of Leh district and stressed on the need to have a uniform format to fill death reports in all the hospitals/dispensaries of district to establish the lapses and correct reasons.
The Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Tsering Mutup, Senior Doctors, Block Medical Officers and Gynecologist were present in the meeting.
