Members of Parliament( MPs) in Malawi have rejected a request by the government to debate the 2007/2008 budget insisiting that the Speaker of Parliament Louis Chimango invoke section 65 of the constitution to declare some seats of MPs on the government side vacant.
The section says members of parliament who join other parties cross the floor.
Most cabinet ministers were from UNited Democratic Front which is now an opposition party and joined Democratic Progressive Party(DPP).
Opposition members of parliament insist that the speaker should deal with this ection before anything can be done.
Sources within the opposition indicate that once the Speaker involves this section, the opposition will start impeachment procedures because there will be very few Mps from government side in the house.
Parliament has since adajourned for the Speaker and the government to agree o one thing.
