The most threatening and disturbing factor in Indian Democracy is the tendency of Indian political party leaders, with the exception of communist and socialist parties, to convert Indian Democracy into a new format called ‘the Hereditory-Democracy’. We can even say that Indian Democracy is heading towards "Monarchy"and in a decade or two, the political leaders will manage to enact any law to safegaurd their wards to succeed them without any difficulty.
The Indian forefathers or the architects of Indian Democracy, like Mahatma, Nehru, Sardar Vallabai Patel,Dr.Ambedkar, Dr.Rajendra Prasad, Dr.Radha Krishnan and lastly Kamaraj did not visualise it nor they had any plan of converting democracy as their household property. In fact the above said leaders never took care of their family.Late.Kamaraj did not even get married and his mother was wallowing in poverty when he was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
In the late 1960’s the degeneration of Indian democracy began throughout India. Each political party leader who came to power developed a vision of nurturing his own wards in politics and groomed them carefully in a planned manner to succeed him or her in politics and this tendency did not confine to any particular state.
When Mrs.Indira Gandhi, was shot dead in the year 1984,her son Mr.Rajive Gandhi, without any political basis or experience could easily become the Prime Minister of India and we all know very well the tradition continues. In Orissa,J.B.Patnayak was easily succeeded by his son Naveen Patnayak. In Haryana, Devilal was succeeded by his son Om Prakash Chautala. In Tamil Nadu, the ‘Hereditory-Democracy’ has grown up full-fledged.There is already the talk of succession of Mr.M.K.Stalin to the Chief Ministership after the exit of his Octogenerian father and the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. His another son Mr.Azagiri is controlling his party in the South, while Stalin is controlling North of Tamil Nadu.It did not end there. The Chief Minister has also managed to instal his another daughter as the MP of Rajya Sabaha.
The most interesting aspect of this ‘Hereditory-Democracy’ is that the people are taken for granted. For example each Minister or each MLA in Tamil Nadu is grooming his ward to succeed him through careful and skilful manipulation, political advertisements, instructions given to party cadres etc
The main reason for grooming the wards to succeed them,is the huge wealth that they had amassed in their political career over the years and the political leaders are not willing to share it with common people. Therefore, in the democracy that is prevalent today in India, it is the duty of a common man or a voter to simply acknowledge ‘the powers that be’, without raising any objection or revolt. In other words, it is the earnest duty of an Indian voter, to grant licence to the political power-mongers,to rule, to amass wealth, to allow their wards to succeed without raising any hue and cry and be a silent spectator.
If at all a common man wants to play any active role in the existing democracy, it is his duty, to join a political party and blindly support the powers that be at the helm of affairs without questioning their authority and if offerred to share the spoils along with his fellow human beings. There ends his role in the present day ‘Hereditory-Democracy.’
