According to Democratic sources both supportive and in touch with Hillary Clinton’s campaign have described one big way of sentiment that Bill Clinton needs to stop with the aggressive campaigning. Anonymous sources who act as either unpaid advisers or surrogates have said in separate interviews that the statements by Bill Clinton that made headlines had hurt more than it did help with Hillary’s campaign in South Carolina.
The comments by Bill Clinton were considered to be racially insensitive in the verbal sparring with fellow US Democratic hopeful Barack Obama. One source that has known both Clintons for decades said that Bill has become tone deaf and has missed a beat about the dynamic he was brought forth upon Hillary’s campaign.
“Something has happened,” according to the source. The source adds: “He just wants to help her too much, or maybe protect his own legacy too much.”
According to another source that had worked in Clinton’s administration, the source called it unbelievable that Bill had linked Obama’s victory in South Carolina to Reverend Jesse Jackson’s victories in 1984 and 1988.
Some had interpreted Bill’s remarks as an attempt to dismiss Obama’s victory because over half the voters were African-American.
Bring up the issue of race into the 2008 Democratic contest had caused anger and outrage in the Democratic Party. One source had described an angry phone call between Bill Clinton and Democratic Senator Ted Kennedy after Hillary’s victory in New Hampshire.
While Bill Clinton’s tactics are deemed aggressive, he still has a high approval rating among Democrats. Overall, he his seem as a vital asset. However, a long-time Clinton supporter said that he needs to be his “summer self.”
