According to reporters, Anders Fogh Rasmussen has said that the treaty was good for his country of Denmark. It looks as if the announcement will be viewed as a vote of confidence in the document. That comes two days before the treaty is signed by member states of the European Union in Lisbon, Portugal.
However, Ireland will hold a referendum on the EU Reform Treaty sometime in 2008. It is unknown when Ireland will seek to hold a referendum during that time.
Originally, they were due to vote on the European Constitution back in 2005. But that was done away after both France and the Netherlands voted “No.” After an investigation by Denmark’s ministry of justice, it was concluded that the new treaty would not lead to a loss of national sovereignty.
Rasmussen said to reporters: “When sovereignty is relinquished, a referendum is needed. When no sovereignty is relinquished, a parliament will ratify the text.”
He has already announced a fresh referendum on adopting the Euro. Back in 2000, the voters in Denmark rejected the Euro.
