Tampa Florida. The Carolina Panthers have decided to place starting quarterback Cam Newton, 25, on the inactive list on Sunday afternoon. Newton suffered a hairline fracture on his rib during the third preseason game versus the New England Patriots.
Newton did not play in the fourth and final preseason game versus the Pittsburgh Steelers due to his rib injury. The Panthers will start ten year veteran of the National Football League Derek Anderson.
The Panthers are the defending National Football Conference Southern Division champions. The Panthers coaching staff was fearful if they played Cameron despite his rib injury, Cameron would not be able to give them the best chance to win their week one regular season game versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday afternoon at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.
Another reason the Panthers coaching staff decided to keep Cameron on the sideline for the Buccaneers game was due to the fact that if Cameron was suffer an injury during the game, the Panthers would lose one of their most valuable players on the roster for a long period of time.
Anderson will be backed up by Joe Webb who was signed by the Panthers before the start of the 2014 regular football season as a free agent, Webb was a former quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings who drafted him in the sixth round of the 2010 National Football League Draft out of the University of Alabama Birmingham.
