As soon as the Barack Obama administration takes over the White House on January 20, there will be many Senate confirmations. However, it does not seem that Timothy Geithner will not be confirmed right away. So far, it has been revealed that Geithner failed to pay up to $34,000 in taxes several years ago. This interesting tidbit of information is going to slow down the confirmation process.
Obama has picked Geithner to be the next Secretary of the Treasury. Obama said that the situation was very much an embarrassment. He added that it was an “innocent mistake” on Geithner’s part. However, Obama feels that it probably will not disqualify Geithner. There is the strong chance that Geithner will be confirmed by the US Senate. Senate Democrats and Senate Republicans strongly feel the same way.
Only two GOP Senates objected to the confirmation hearing. However, both Democrats and Republican Senators have voiced strong support for Geithner to be the next US Secretary of the Treasury. Despite some opposition, Geithner is getting plenty of support from Republicans.
Obama said that it was an embarrassment for Geithner. However, Obama adds that it was an innocent and common mistake made by people that work internationally.
The two GOP Senators that are trying to block the confirmation hearings are Senator Jon S. Kyl of Arizona and Senator Jim Bunning of Kentucky. They oppose the confirmation hearing is because that it is too quick and too rushed.
Obama is confident that Geithner will be confirmed. If that is the case, it will probably take awhile for Geithner to be confirmed as the next Treasury Secretary. Will Geithner be confirmed as the next Treasury Secretary? We will have to wait and see. When will Geithner be confirmed? We will have to wait and see.
It is probably going to be a very bumpy road for Geithner. However, it looks that he is supported by both Democrats and Republicans.
