Destruction of schools continue in northern Pakistan

BY Alamzeb khan

Islamabad: militants led by radical cleric molvi Fazlulal torched another boy’s school at odigram area in the suburb of district headquarter swat, northern Pakistan on Monday, as total number of destroyed school reaches 186. Out of total figure the number of destroyed schools for girls stands at 120 while that for boys exceeds 60.

The fifteen months troubled environment in Swat became more suffocating and vulnerable when Taliban in Swat announced 15th January as a deadline to ban education in the area. The deadline was another message from Taliban to Government of Pakistan to re-challenge government’s writ in the area.

However several statements from government official including cabinet minister Sherry Rehman and provincial minister Sardar Hussain Babak, contributed nothing to force Taliban to review their decision. And Sardar Hussain Babak is still optimistic about re-opening of schools after summer vacation in March 2009. But he is unable to comment that where these students will attend their classes as most of these institutions are now turned down to ashes.
The future of education in swat is encountered with complete darkness as there seems no production on part of government. However latest reports say that security forces are flexing their muscles to launch a massive operation.

On the other hand Taliban issued yesterday a list of more than 200 people belonged to local and central leadership to appear in Taliban Courts otherwise they will be targeted. This announcement further terrified the environment and has faded away all hopes to bring education back to the deserted swat valley.
