Dhaka University Teachers Allien do it again – they apologize to the wrong people
It is heartening to see the state of intellectual emptiness in our seats of higher education – as reflected by the leaders of the teachers’ association
It would be an interesting issue to find out whether the system, through which our universities are run, whether these systems flawed or our teachers’ community as a whole have lost their edge.
We ask this question for a reason. If you look at the leaders of different association leaders of teaching community and also, if you look at the different people who are in many administrative posts in the public universities, it does not seem that they are worth the positions. Neither they properly serve the institutions Nor they serve the community they are supposed to serve. Have we, as a nation, misplaced our faith to incompetent people to guide our next generation? Or is it the problem with the system, it somehow selects the worst of the group as the leaders?
We know that our political system was totally flawed – thats why we used to get the worst of the MPs from the political leaders – most cases, if not in almost all cases. Its not true that political parties do not have good, visionary leaders. But we as a nation could not yet develop a system that would push the quality people to the top. Rather, the system used to pick the leaders of worst kind from the bottom of the list. If you are honest, if you have some quality, then forget about going to the top. Only the chaukars go to the top, that was the situation in our political systems.
Is it the same case in our educational institutions too? Seems like it is.
The reason we are raising this issue today is coming from what is being reported in today’s papers.
Whom did they humiliate – if they actually are responsible for the acts being suggested – it seems like true now through their apologies.
The question that we should be asking ourselves – TO WHOM THEIR CRIME WAS DIRECTED? The stuents, the nation, the army or the teaching community as a whole?
I do not know about the people who are enough grown up – who are above 50 years of age or so. But to those who are below 40 years of age, I can tell you these, do not expect much from your nation. Because your uncles did not leave anything for you guys – they have EATEN OR DESTROYED most of the things that was there for the nation. You should start asking yourself what you can do for the nation so that your next generation do not say something similar to that towards your generation!
It might also be examined by those in the academia who are less than 40 years olds, whether to start demanding to review all the professorships that was given to the members of their senior faculty. All their promotion related files should be reviewed and re-opned, re-examined. They all should be sent to retirement (at the least) if the reviews finds any plagiarisms and fraud in their tenureship files.
If you thought some of the ideas are worth of your reading time, please forward it to others. If you have an ear to the members of the teachers of different universities in Bangladesh, please forward it to them. If you have an ear to the journalists and news editors of the electronic media, discuss it with them. Hope they would look at the suggestions and give due diligence.
It seems that they should apologize to their students first, their colleagues next and to the people of the nation whom they offended most by not only neglecting the high responsibility that was bestowed upon them, but also denying the minimum kind of responsibility that the nation expects from its every citizens. Again, that is if the allegations are true.
The two deans of DU has apologized to the members of the Army – to everybody in the military forces – from the Soldiers to the Chief. But did they do the crime to the Army? Or did they do the crime to their students, to their institutions? How about the people of the nation?
Who will fix these flaws? Is it the right time to fix these flaws? Would our citizens come forward to address these issues? We know our Chief Justice has promised to cleanse the justice system. We are waiting for that to happen. But who will cleanse the education system?
