Difference between compact 35mm camera and single lens reflex camera

The compact 35mm camera

Compacts range from inexpensive basic models to higher-priced fully automatic cameras. Shown here is a moderately priced compact.

Advantages

Lightweight

Bright clear viewfinder

Built-in exposure meter autofocus

Autofocus

Automatic film wind-on and re-wind

Red warning light showing when flash should be used

Ideal for candid photography, just frame the picture and shot.

Disadvantages

The viewfinder is above the lens so what you see is not what the lens sees

Cannot be used for subjects closer than 1.5 meters (5feet)

The slowest shutter is 1/60th second, so it is not possible to use at dusk or after dark.

No control over shutter speeds or apertures, which means you cannot deliberately `blur’ or `freeze’ action

Will not accept interchangeable lenses

No self-timer or time exposure (`B’) settings

This compact is ideal for beginners, or the occasional photographer. Used within its limitations, it will produce well –exposed sharp printers when photographing subjects from 1.5 meters (5feet) to infinity in daylight, and with flash when the subjects is within 4 meters (13 feet) of the camera.

Single lens reflex camera

SLR cameras allow you to photograph a greater variety of situations than a compact camera, and you can at home future date add more lenses and other accessories.

Here are three types of SLRs:

It is Manual with through the lens (TTL) exposure metering.

Automatic with manual override

This is fully automatic (and very expensive!) the moderately priced SLR illustrated is an automatic with manual override.

Advantages

Focus is very accurate.

Aperture and shutter sped control may be used on automatic or manual setting.

Through the lens exposure meter

Shutter speeds for 1/1000th second to 40 seconds when used automatically.

`B’ (time exposure) for long exposures

Self-timer

Closest focusing distance 0.45m

The reflex mirror system allows exact farming of the picture.

Interchangeable lenses and other accessories may be attached.

Disadvantages

Slightly heavier and bulkier than a compact camera

No built –in flash.

Manual film wind-on and re-wind.

The mirror clunks back into place after each exposure, therefore it is not as quiet as a compact camera.

More expensive (but you get more for your money)

This could be the start of a hobby which will last a lifetime. That’s what happened to me!
