Diplomatic Nudity: Pakistan’s Humiliation

Nudity and kissing in public places are crimes in Pakistan; we do not lay naked to sunbathe in our homes or at the seaside; getting naked before our own family members is against our social values.

Only the mentally unstable in our society run naked and commit strange offenses against Pakistani citizens who might be busy in buying and selling in market or bazaar areas.

We Pakistanis only get naked once before a doctor in our youth, when we apply to join Pakistan’s Armed Forces. Prior to our ISSB exam, army doctors checks our body including our genital organs while wearing gloves. Once we are declared fit by the doctor then we can go on to further exams, and at that occasion we stand completely naked.

What British security officials have done to our top diplomat in Great Britain, Mr. Wajid Shamsul Hassan, can be termed as the darkest hour in the history of international diplomacy: he was compelled to pull off his clothes for a body search before meeting detained Pakistani students in a British prison.

According to a column writer of Urdu daily Nawai Waqat, at least two diplomats were exposed to this kind of humiliation. Only terrorists can be blamed for this state of affairs; they have created psychological fear among people to the extent that allied countries suspect their allies now. In the war against terror, Pakistan is the strongest ally of the USA. But when our top diplomats are treated like terrorists, this alliance against terrorism weakens.
