Div Com inaugurates two day seminar on medicinal plants

 Srinagar,March 14 (Scoop News) – A 2-day seminar on Medicinal Plants: Current Status and Future Prospects was organized at Islamia College of Science and Commerce, Srinagar.

            The Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Dr. Asgar Hassan Samoon was the chief guest while Commissioner, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Dr. G.N. Qasba was the guest of honour.

            Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Asgar Samoon said that there is a need to map, inventorize and document the medicinal and aromatic plants. He stressed on the need to have action plan for conservation of biodiversity, especially for the Himalayan belts. He said that a lot of research is going on throughout the country on medicinal plants but there is need for convergence of schemes at all levels. He stressed on conducting research on traditional knowledge about medicinal plants.

            The Divisional Commissioner assured that all necessary help and assistance will be given to conserve the biodiversity of the State and creation of a biodiversity park. He encouraged the entrepreneurs and researchers to come forward and establish herbal gardens as there is potential for generation of employment in the sector. He hoped that universities will take up post-graduation courses in herbal plants so that it opens up a career option for them. He also assured that all necessary steps would be taken to conserve and protect the vulnerable species.

            Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner, SMC, Dr. G.N. Qasba said that there is need to do more research and conserve the flora and fauna of our State and protect biodiversity. He looked forward to a greater interaction between the administration and academicians to make Srinagar a green, clean and bio diverse city.  

            Earlier, Prof. Ghulam Hassan Dar, Prof. Emeritus gave the key note address and made a PowerPoint presentation about the biodiversity of the State.

            Prof. Tariq Ahmad Kawoos welcomed the guests and Dr. Khursheed Ahmad presented the vote of thanks.

            A souvenir prepared by the College was released by the Divisional Commissioner on the occasion.

            The Divisional Commissioner also inspected the Botanical Garden and Museum of the Islamia College.

            The function, among others was attended by various Principals of Colleges of Srinagar city, experts from Karnataka, Maharashtra, Delhi and Jammu Universities, Lecturers of the Botany Department and students.
